Chapter 3.1.7
Matthew Bramhill
By Anna Bramhill Crozier

Matthew Bramhill, son of Matthew Bramhill and Elizabeth Bent was born Sept. 26, 1889. They lived on a farm on the 2nd of Minto Township, just out of Palmerston. Matthew had four brothers (William, Thomas, Richard and Clendon) and four sisters (Sophia, Keziah, Elizabeth and Sarah).

On July 15, 1936 Matthew married Agnes Pearl Dobberthein, born on Oct. 21, 1905. They lived on Main Street in the east-end of Palmerston. They had two daughters. On Sept. 10, 1937 their first daughter Agnes Anna was born. Two years latter their second daughter, Edith Elizabeth ‘Betty’ was born on September 8, 1939.

Matthew raised pigs and chickens. He had two acres of land, a large garden and grew strawberries. Everyone in Palmerston enjoyed his strawberries, which he sold along with other vegetables like onions, potatoes, peas, etc.

His wife Agnes worked at the Plywood factory in Palmerston, the Spinrite yarn factory in Listowel, then at the Palmerston Hospital.

Matthew and Agnes enjoyed going to relatives’ places to play Lost Heir or to Bingo games. They enjoyed going to the Orange Lodge to dance. They always took their two daughters, Anna and Betty, along. Thomas (Uncle Tommy) Bramhill and Cora Bridge came over every week for a game of Lost Heir.

Anna Crozier

Anna Agnes Bramhill, born Sept. 10, 1937, daughter of Matthew and Agnes Bramhill married Lloyd Thomas William Crozier on June 19, 1954. They had three children, Brian Lloyd Crozier, born March 4, 1955, Bradley William Crozier born April 27, 1957, Debbie Ann Crozier born February 23, 1962.

They had 300 acres of land, 100 acres west half Lot 3, Con. 12, and 200 acres on Lot2 Con. 13 of Maryborough Township. They had a barn full of cattle, pigs and chickens. They grew cucumbers for Bicks Pickles, delivered them to Durham to be graded, then shipped to Bicks in Toronto.

They were kept busy farming and working away from the farm. Lloyd drove truck for the Palmerston Plywood factory. He later worked at Campbell Soup, Listowel. Then he bought his own truck and hauled steel from Stoney Creek to Winnipeg, Manitoba, bringing cattle back from Manitoba. Anna worked at the Palmerston Plywood Factory till 1960 when Campbell Soup plant opened near Listowel. Anna worked there from 1960 to 1997. At holiday time, and between haying and harvest, they took trips, one year to the East Coast, Newfoundland, another year to the West Coast and over to Vancouver Island. They always took their mom, Agnes Bramhill along (after her husband Matthew had died). They went to Florida a few times during the winter holidays.

In 1971 Lloyd and Anna built a house on the 100 acres across the road (west half of Lot 3, Con. 12 Maryborough), moving in during December. For entertainment, Lloyd played hockey for Moorefield. Brian and Brad played hockey in Palmerston. Lloyd and Anna curled and bowled on the leagues in Palmerston. Brian also played the accordion. Bradley played the guitar and Debbie played piano.

The Township of Maryborough needed gravel to build the local roads and after we sold them some, we ended up with a 2-acre spring-fed pond. After haying and harvest, the neighbours would come over for a refreshing swim each night. Lloyd made benches so all could sit around a fire, talk and roast hot dogs as they enjoyed getting to know the neighbours better. Some of the friends would camp over on the weekends.

They enjoyed life until February 23, 1975 (Debbie’s birthday) when Lloyd Crozier died of cancer at the age of 39. After Lloyd passed away, Anna and the three children, Brian, Bradley and Debbie continued cash cropping. As soon as Anna arrived home from work at Campbell Soup, and the children arrived home from school they would all get on a tractor and manage to get the crops harvested. They had two old self-propelled combines. While Anna drove one combine, the boys would repair the other one. Debbie drew the grain wagons to the granaries. It was a real challenge, which they met.

In September 23, 1977 Debbie married Bill Woods. They live on the sixth of Maryborough near Moorefield. Bradley married Nancy Schinbein on July 19, 1980. They live at 530 Toronto Street in Palmerston Brian married Dianne Coffey. They live on Eagle Dr. in Elmira.

Debbie Crozier Woods

Debbie Ann Crozier (b. February 23, 1962) married William Edward Woods (b. January 29, 1959). Their first child, Sandra Lynn was born on February 19, 1978. At that time they lived on the home form for a year, before moving to Palmerston. Their second child was born, Richard Edward, on July 18, 1979.

Bill worked as a carpenter and was a backyard mechanic. Debbie worked at Campbell Soup Co. and then as a cashier at Becker’s Mild Co. in Palmerston. On October 4, 1980, an accident with a grindstone took Bill’s sight. They continued to live in Palmerston for a few years. In the fall of 1981 Bill went to Michigan and got a Leader Dog (seeing-eye dog), named Murphy.

For three years Bill and Debbie rented a farmhouse just outside of Harriston. Here they heated with wood so the children got a chance to see what work was involved in cutting, splitting and piling the wood. One year the children also helped raise 200 chickens.

In 1988 Bill and Debbie bought an old school house, S.S. #13 on the 6th Con. of Maryborough Township. Along with family and friends they completely renovated the old school into a family resident. The ceiling was lowered to allow for a second floor. Plumbing, heating and hydro were installed. The basement was dug out, it was insulated and a new roof was put on. It was a major undertaking, but they were able to move in during the spring of 1989. A few years later the cement school was covered with vinyl siding and soffit, facia and eavestroughs were installed. In June 1996 a driving shed was built.

Sandra and Rick both graduated from Norwell high school in Palmerston. Rick is apprenticing in plumbing and heating, expecting to have his plumbing licence in the fall of 2000. Rick is currently living at home. Sandra is working health care, specializing in geriatrics. She graduated with her Personal Support Worker Course through Conestoga College and works full-time for Victorian Order of Nurses out of Guelph. On May 6, 2000, Sandra married David Acheson and they had one son, Joshua William James born February 2, 1999. They reside in Palmerston.

She also danced with the Encore Dance Studio in Elmira for four years, but gave it up because she liked soccer better. Krista and three of her classmates from St. Teresa of Avila School entered the Skills Canada Technology Challenge. They came in 1st at the Regional level and 2nd at the Provincial level.
