Chapter 3.1.10
2. Lauretta Shewan
By Brian Shewan

Lauretta Munford was born May 25, 1919, the second oldest child of Alfred and Sarah (Bramhill) Munford. She was born in a sod shack on the family farm south of McCord, Sask. and went to school in a two-room schoolhouse at Varsity. Growing up on the prairies was a difficult time, especially in the dirty thirties.

Lauretta enjoyed visiting relatives and worked in Ontario 1945–46. This is where she met her husband Leslie Shewan, and they were married on June 17, 1947 at Meyronne, Sask. Leslie had several jobs such as working for CPR in Sask., Swifts in Moose Jaw, and the CNR in Palmerston, before settling down to raise their family on the Munford farm near McCord, Sask. They purchased ¾ of a section of land and helped Lauretta’s brother, Elmer, farm for 30 years. Over the years they were very involved in community and church activities.

They decided to retire and they built a new home in Swift Current, Sask. where they retired in Oct. 1981. Lauretta keeps very busy with family history while Les enjoys his garden and repairing things. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1997.

They have two sons,
                Brian born Oct. 28, 1952
                Calvin, born Nov. 9, 1954.

The following was posted on our home page in memory of Lauretta.

In Loving Memory of

Lauretta Alfreda Shewan

We are fortunate to have such an extensive history and genealogy of the Bramhill family. While gathering such a history is due to the contributions of many people, one individual stands out in her efforts in documenting the genealogy of our family in Canada. Lauretta (Munford) Shewan spent many years visiting Bramhills across Canada gathering and manually recording the genealogy of our family. She meticulously documented the family lines to provide us with an incredibly complete record. It was on this foundation we have been able to build the history we have today. We have knowledge of a much broader family thanks to Lauretta’s work.

 Thank you Lauretta.

We extend out condolences to Leslie Shewan and his family on the passing of Lauretta.

                           We will always remember her.
