Chapter 3.1.10
4. Elmer Leslie Munford
By Gary Munford

My father Elmer Leslie Munford is the fourth child of Alfred Munford and Sarah Munford (nee Bramhill). He was born in the sod shack on the north ½ of section 4, township 5, range 7, west of the 3rd meridian on Nov. 23 / 1923. His schooling was at a country school called Varsity School about 2 miles from home. The trip was made each day on foot or by horse. He quit school in grade 8 to help his father with the farm, and from that day on farming and cattle were his life. As a young man he played hockey in the winter and softball in the summer. There were no indoor skating rinks in those days, you played often on a cleared spot on the river after you had scraped and removed all the snow. Just east of our present home there was a large open area that served as a hockey arena. They had a building beside the river that was known as the skating house that they used for years until it was lost in the spring flood of 1953. Over the years Dad served on many boards and committees. He spent years on the local Credit Union board of directors, -- years on the local Coop Board of Directors, being one of the founding members of our local Coop, --years on the local church board, as well as a number of years as a local Agriculture reporter. Through the years he also coached hockey and baseball for some of the area teams.

Over the years growing up our household was always a busy place. Mom always seemed to have company and babysat children for neighbors on a regular basis. We have a ball diamond on our farm that was set up by Dad and some of the local friends. Every Wednesday evening was ball night for a lot of years, and the Varsity Ladies Aid, a local charity organization had their annual picnic here complete with homemade ice cream and fresh lemonade. Slowly the ball games came to an end as farms got bigger and a lot of the young people left the community for "greener pastures" as the farming way of life did not hold a lot of future.

On Oct. 23 / 1954 he married Emily June Gordon of Orono, Ontario in a quiet ceremony in the family home on the SE ¼ of section 8, township 5, range 7, west of the 3rd meridian. Dad and Mother worked together and ran the family farm along with Grandpa Munford for a number of years until Dad bought out Grampa in 19--. In the years in between Dad’s sister Lauretta and her husband Leslie Shewan bought the Roy Stinson land (North1/2 of section 33, township 4, range 7, west of the 3rd meridian) and began to farm along with Dad and Grandpa Munford. Together Dad and Uncle Les built a land base of 1600 acres of good productive farmland.

Elmer and June Munford had a family of six children.
