Chapter 3.3.5

Zillah "Zella" Goodwin

By Irene Young

I only knew of her as Zella. This is how it is spelled on her marriage certificate to her first husband "Alfred Linnington", in an article taken from the Coronach history book, in her obituary, and on her gravestone.  The name Zillah is on her birth registration, so if that were the proper spelling as registered it never was used.

Zella was the fourth daughter of John Goodwin and Elizabeth Bramhill. She was born 20 July 1884, Palmerston, Ontario. She died on 13 April 1941 at Coronach, Saskatchewan.

Zella married a widower, Alfred William Linington, on 14 June 1907 at Toronto, Ontario. Alfred was born 9 November 1873 at Portsmouth, England, son of Alfred Linington and Martha Knight. It was on 24 August 1914, that Alfred enlisted in World War One, and was later killed in action on 15 May 1915, at Ypres, Belgium. This must of been a tragic time for Zella, not only losing her husband to the war, but also having two small children ages six and four to care for. Sometime during the next ten years Zella, with her two children came to Assiniboia Saskatchewan, where her sister Beatrice was living.

After the death of Alfred Linington, Zella married Tom Crawford in 1925 at Vantage, Saskatchewan.  Tom was born 20 August 1888 in Ireland, and died on 29 April 1967 at Prince Albert.

After Zella and Tom were married, they lived at Vantage, Saskatchewan, but when they heard the railway was going to be built through, what was called the south country, they decided to move in order to set-up a store in the town of Coronach.

They moved there in 1926, and opened a General Store, which also housed the Post Office. In the fall of 1926 amid much excitement the first train arrived. Tom also opened an International Harvester Implement shed. While Zella and Tom lived at Coronach they were both active in the community and had undying faith in the growth and prosperity of the town and surrounding districts.

In the 1930's the Crawford’s had the following verse on the back of their store bills:

Be quick to kick if things go wrong,

But kick to us and make it strong,

To make things right gives us delight

When we are wrong and you are right.

Zella lived 13 years in the small town before her passing. She had been in poor health for sometime.  In Zella’s obituary she is noted as one with a kind, sunny disposition that endeared her to all, and that her strong personality made her an outstanding citizen.

After Zella’s death in 1941, Tom stayed on in Coronach until 1944 when he then took up ranching near Harptree, Saskatchewan. He moved to Regina about 1948, and to Prince Albert in 1959 and remained there until his passing.

Both Tom and Zella are buried in the town cemetery at Assiniboia, Sask

Zella and Tom had no children of their own, but adopted a daughter in 1933

1.Colleen Elizabeth Crawford, born 28 January 1933 in Moose Jaw. She married John Herbert Bennett, but later divorced.
