Chapter 3.5
Hannah Keziah Bramhill Goodwin
By Irene Goodwin (Young)

Hannah Keziah Bramhill was born June 8, 1858 in Minto Township on the 4th Line. She was a daughter of George Bramhill and Ann Garland. She continued to live on the same Line after her marriage on October 31, 1882 at Palmerston, Ontario to Richard Goodwin. Richard Goodwin was born on September 12, 1858 at Elora in Pilkington Township, son of Eli Goodwin and Elizabeth Panting. Richard would be about 8 years of age when his family moved from Elora to north of Palmerston, Lot 20 Concession 3 in Minto Township.

This picture was taken at their wedding in 1882.

Hannah Keziah Bramhill and Richard Goodwin lived on a farm in Minto Township; this is where their four children were born, George, Mervyn, Bessie and Nellie.

Hannah Keziah knew the sorrow of losing a child when her oldest, a son George, died as a small boy.

In 1904 Hannah Keziah and Richard and their three children moved into Palmerston where Richard was employed by the railroad.

Hannah Keziah was a member of the Methodist Church and took an interest in various areas of work associated with it. She taught Sunday School and was a member of the WMA and the WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union). She was a woman noted for her striking personality with a character that was genuine and dependable.

Hannah Keziah suffered with poor health but she was able to carry on with her usual duties. The later part of June 1924, she made arrangements to visit her daughter, Bessie, in London Ontario but shortly after her arrival she took seriously ill and was confined to bed at her daughter’s until her death, August 3, 1924 at age sixty-six. She, along with her husband Richard who also died in London Ontario December 23,1941, is buried at Palmerston Cemetery.

GEORGE BRAMHILL GOODWIN was born March 12, 1886, died August 9th, 1897, at age eleven in Minto Township. He is buried at Salem Cemetery, Minto Township.

MERVYN PHILLIPSON GOODWIN was born September29, 1889. He was raised by godly parents and was in attendance with his family at the Hope Methodist Church, which was situated on the farm of his grandfather, Eli Goodwin.

He attended Beehive School but he was not a lover of "The Three R's".

Soon after the family moved into Palmerston Mervyn had his first job of driving a one-horse delivery wagon. He then went on to a job in the Oatmeal Mill, where he packed boxes and one hundred-pound bags of oatmeal earning six dollars a week. Upon its closure he worked for a flourmill, and by this time his wages had increased to seven dollars and fifty cents a week.

In the fall of 1909, Eli Goodwin (Mervyn's cousin) returned to Palmerston for a visit from his homestead at Colgate, Saskatchewan and told of the opportunities awaiting young men who were willing to go into an area in southern Saskatchewan to break up the land and claim a homestead. Mervyn must have shown this adventurous spirit when in February 1910 he left Palmerston by train for Weyburn, Saskatchewan where he was met by his cousin Eli who hired him that spring while Eli and two other men went further west to claim land. The two men that accompanied Eli staked out their own land, while Eli staked out land for Mervyn.

This picture of Mervyn and his two sisters was likely taken around 1910 just before he left Palmerston. Bessie is on the left and Nellie is on the right.

It was later that summer that Mervyn left Colgate for his homestead traveling close to one hundred miles by oxen and wagon. He brought in supplies including lumber to build a one-room shack. The barn was built of sod. Mervyn returned to Colgate for the winter and then back to the homestead for six months until he was able to stay the year round.

In 1913 the railroad came within thirty miles of Mervyn's homestead and it was shortly after that, his mother Hannah Keziah came from Palmerston, Ontario by train to visit her son. He was there to meet her and then began the thirty-mile trip back to his homestead with oxen and cart.

This picture was taken when she visited her son Mervyn Goodwin at his homestead around 1913 or 1914.

What an experience that would have been for her.

On a return trip to Colgate Mervyn met Laurabel Tetreau, daughter of Arthur Tetreau and Amelia Mousseau who had moved there from Bad Axe Michigan in 1910.

On December 29, 1915 Mervyn married Laurabel Tetreau at her parent’s home in Colgate. From then on it was their life together that lasted for seventy-one years and nine months. They endured hardships like the other settlers did but they progressed from farming with oxen to a team of horses bought in 1916 onto a model "T" Ford car bought in 1927.

Mervyn and Laurabel saw the depression of the 1930's through with determination and by 1944 were able to build a new farm home.

In 1955 they retired to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, leaving the farm to their only son. The third generation of the family is still living on the original homestead.

In 1965 Nellie and Bessie visited Mervyn at his home in Moose Jaw. This picture was taken on the steps of that home.

Mervyn and Laurabel were godly people with a deep faith in God that could be easily seen in their lives. They both lived a good life. Laurabel suffered with some health problems over the years but Mervyn was the healthy one. He spent one night in hospital at age fifty and not again until age one hundred and one when hospitalized after suffering a fall. He credited his good health to his daily, 'one tablespoon of black strap molasses'.

This picture of Mervyn and Laurabel Goodwin was taken in December 1975 on their 60th wedding anniversary.

Early Family Letter

This letter was written by Hannah Keziah Bramhill (Goodwin) to her son Mervyn and Family. There was no date on the letter although we believe it was written in the early spring of 1924. The girls spoken of started school in the summer of 1924, and Hannah Keziah died August 1924. This is probably the last letter she ever wrote to Mervyn as she went to London, from Palmerston in June and died there.

Dear Children,

This is a nice bright morning but cold, say you have some weather out there, we are in the midst of winter yet, lots of snow, it has been terrible cold the wind in the north, I think it has changed to the west now, the sidewalks are not bare at all, it has been a steady cold winter. Oh say that will be nice if you can get the Children with the Teacher, it will save you quite a journey, the Dear little Girls I know how you will miss them when they go to school at first, but it will be nice for them to go. Laura you did not say if you got those pair of stockings for Gordon or not. I got them registered, hope you get them, perhaps you forgot. Gertrude Bramhill was here with us over Sunday. We went to church three time all the same, we have a Grand Minister, we all like Him so much. His subject last night was, how a man can make the best of Himself. It was good, He referred to the Men with talents, how they use them. There was a Baby Girl come to the parsonage, that is something wonderful, never before has there one came, so we are making Her a life member of the Mission Band. Hope you are all better of your colds, we are both pretty fair. Papa has gone to the freight sheds this afternoon, hope He gets along alright. I think the Girls will be home for Easter, hope so anyway. Let us all try to be good for it is the best way to live. Lots of love to you all, hope to hear from you soon again.

From loving Parents.
