        John and Eliza's son, Matthew, was born 4 August 1855 at Kelfield, near Owston, about 2 miles from Epworth in Lincolnshire. He married Annis Morton on 1 November 1875 and their children Gertrude (born 18 April 1876), Thomas William (born 31st March 1884) and Harry Morton (born 25 January 1890) were all born around the Rotherham area. Matthew's occupation changes from labourer, to drayman to iron works labourer over the years.
        John and Eliza had also moved to the same general area as had some of their other children including my ancestor William and George (the eldest son). Matthew's sister-in-law (Sarah Maria, Tom's wife) is a witness at Matthew and Annis's wedding and another brother Oliver and his wife (Clara) are also close by - in fact, the other Gertrude Annis (born 1888) who I thought
might have been Matthew's daughter (perhaps replacing the 1876 Gertrude) turns out to be Oliver and Clara's child, named after her aunt!
        The John and Eliza family moved from agriculture in Lincolnshire and migrated west to the industrial heartland of England. Rotherham was a big iron and steel town as was it's neighbour, Sheffield. Today, Rotherham is almost a suburb of Sheffield and the small villages, Masbrough, Kimberworth, Whiston, Aughton etc where these Bramhill families were living have all been swallowed up by urban development.
        Oliver and my great grandfather William were coal miners, Tom was a carter and the other brothers, George and Matthew had jobs in a steel works. I wonder what made Matthew want to move on further and emigrate?
        Interestingly, looking at the 1881 census records, the Bramhills in the east seem to have been more prosperous with farms and small holdings whilst those in the west - even as far away as Lancashire and Liverpool seem to be industrial workers.

        In England Matthew worked on the railways, was a Surveyman and a Labourer. Matthew and Annis emmigrated to America in 1905. They sailed from Liverpool on December 13, 1905 on the vessel called SS Oceanic. The manifest lists a Matthew Bramhill with his wife Annie. It shows him 50yrs old and his wife also 50. There are three children with them Martha E 18yrs, Harry M 16yrs, and Albert 2yrs. On this manifest it says the ticket was paid for by Edmund Fishwick and he was a son-in-law living in Norwalk, Huron Co, Ohio.

Garry's note about the manifest for the SS Oceanic:
        Albert is on the manifest with Matthew and Annis on the ship coming over. I also found him on the 1910 census but him and Ann are not on the 1920 census. On the 1920 Matthew is married to another lady her name Lydia. There is no sign of Ann and Albert I think they might have died in the big flu epidemic of 1917.

Matthew and Annis (Morton) Bramhill

        My grandfather's parents were Matthew and Annis (Morton) Bramhill. They came to America in 1905, as was written in my grandfather's Bible, when Harry was just 15. He had received a Bible from the Salvation Army, as he was a bandsman, upon leaving England.
        My grandfather, Harry Morton Bramhill, was born in Rotherham, England, on January 25, 1890. He was married to Bertha Mildred Smith. They had 2 children Ruth May Bramhill (Baker) and Frank Morton Bramhill. Ruth had no children. 
Frank is my father; I Mildred May (Millie (Mildred) May (Bramhill) Myers) am the oldest, David Morton, Carol Marie, and Jack Michael.
        Harry Morton Bramhill died at the age of 71 years. 10 months 13 days on Dec. 8, 1961.

I have his book at his death and written in there is a list of his sisters and brother. Thomas Bramhill (Gary Bramhill's father in Detroit, Mi's grandfather), Gertrude (Fishwick), Eliza (Angel), Martha (Hook), and Lenora (Carr). The names listed are the sister's married names.

        My grandfather Harry Morton Bramhill was born to Matthew Bramhill and Annis (Morton) Bramhill on 1/25/1890. He had one brother Thomas and four sisters Gertrude, Eliza, Martha, and Lenora. He came to U.S. in 1904 at the age of 14. There was mention if I remember correctly that a William Bramhill lived with them for awhile but went back to England. I don't know much else. Almost all the family but my grandfather settled in the Michigan area and I just today found where Gary lives who would be Thomas's grandson.
