Chapter 7.2.2

Leonora Annis Bramhill

By Brenda Braun

Events both major and minor can affect the direction our lives take. None have as great an impact as the loss of a loved one. My mother, Ruth (Milne) Burgoyne, passed away recently and in helping my father clean out some of her things, I've come across what can only be described as "the mother lode" of family heirlooms, photos and memorabilia that she had received when her mother had passed away (and so on). Organizing this information and memorabilia has led me to become interested in my family history.

Most of it is on my grandfather’s side (Dale-Milne families) but some are from my grandmother. My grandmother’s name was Gertrude Carr; she was born and raised in Norwalk, Ohio of parents Thomas Carr and Leonora Bramhill.

I’ve also come across 2 photos so far that I think are interesting- one shows my grandmother as a young woman, possibly just married, kneeling beside a grave, she had written under the photo Grandma Bramhills grave (cant read the headstone except for the words MOTHER)...the other photo hasn’t a name but says Ma and Harold Carr (the Ma possibly being Lenora or Leonora and one of my grandmothers brothers...My grandmother had several brothers and a few sisters, most of which have passed away...Most of them lived here in the Chatham area...

My grandmother passed away 9 years ago this January 2004. Mom had (I thought) just packed the memorabilia from her house away but as I’ve been going through everything, I’m finding little notes left by Mom telling me whose items they are and if she knew the date or significance of the item she wrote that too. I guess she knew someone would be going through them that might not have a clue...

I also have a piece of paper where my grandmother had written out her family tree up to her Grandmother Annis Morton and her Grandfather Matthew Bramhill. This is interesting though (although this was written in the mid-80's and my grandmother was getting older) she has written on this page her mother as Lenora Cissie...?

I have obituaries for at least my grandmothers generation, there may be more here but not sure. Apparently records in Norwalk were destroyed in a fire. My grandmother had to go through hoops to be able to move from the US to Canada.

I have a set of saltshakers and a cream pitcher that have "Norwalk Centennial 1909 Mrs. Carr" inscribed on them, probably Leonora's?

There are several references to a woman named Aunt Gertie Fishwick. This seems to be a reference to the Gertrude Fishwick and the Salvation Army mentioned on the website at: http://www.bramhill.com/Ch07.2.3-ThomasWilliamBramhill.htm

Leonora Annis Bramhill

Leonora Annis Bramhill was born January 13, 1881 in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England.  She was the second child of Matthew Bramhill and Annis Morton. Leonora married Thomas Carr, son of Andrew Carr and Leonora Carr, on June 28, 1902. Thomas was born December 15, 1875 in Worksop, England.

My grandmother’s birth certificate lists her parents as Tom Carr and Leonora Annis Bramhill; her father was born at Worksop (?) England and her mother at Rotherham (?) England- the writing is bad on the form.

Occupations:

Leonora Carr- 1906- housewife (I remember my grandmother stating that she had also taken in foster children. Grandma always thought it was great fun coming home and finding another child at the table. She recalled, with fondness, several times "a beautiful black baby boy"... she had told me that she wanted her mother to keep him but he left eventually...maybe not a politically correct way to be but she sure did want that baby to stay!

Occupations on various documents:

Thomas Carr- Janitor- 1950, machinist- 1924, Ladleman at Steel Plant (in Norwalk)- 1906, Woodworker- 1942

While organizing the all the memorabilia here are some of the things I have found for the Bramhill/Carr side:

1) Leonora Bramhill Carr - one Bible...in very rough shape, quite used, verses underlined, a signed Salvation profession card from the Salvation Army, I think...

2) Her son's Bibles- one Harry, one Harold (yes, two brothers with similar names, had me quite confused for a while).... sadly, these Bibles weren’t as well used...they are newer Bibles.

3) Leonora Carr (Leonora Bramhill’s mother-in-law) - Funeral book detailing visitors etc.

4) Andrew Carr (her husband)- Funeral book and obituary clippings from paper

5) Harold Morton Carr (son)- Funeral book and package of his Last Will and Testament- also includes his honourable discharge from the Canadian Army (6 months service), other miscellaneous papers. Apparently he'd been in a nursing home in Chatham for a while - the Canadiana. (Incidentally, my grandmother had always said she'd NEVER go the Canadiana even if she was dragged there! Apparently, it was not a nice place! Grandma died still owning her own home.)

6) Birth Certificate of Harry Carr (other son).

7) Thomas Carr - Last Will and Testament - including a bunch of papers - Probate papers, tenancy papers etc.

8) Harold Morton Carr (son) Box of Medallions/Coins, Miscellaneous trinkets – nothing spectacular just trinkets.

9) Gertrude Carr Milne (my grandmother, Leonora and Thomas' daughter)- The Salvation Army Cradle Roll Call- 1909 at Norwalk

10) Leonora Annis Bramhill - Registry of Birth - born on January 13th, 1881, I also have Thomas Carr's birth certificate - December 15th, 1875.

11) Leonora Carr - obituary clippings from Chatham Daily News (her name was spelled several ways, Lenora, Lenore and her middle name was spelled Annice)

12) Leonora Annis Bramhill/Thomas Carr - Marriage Certificate (in great condition!), June 28th 1902

13) Obituaries of their son's and other relatives - one son had been missing for a few days by his wife and family and was found in an abandoned boxcar --- he poisoned himself - empty aspirin bottles and bottles of cleaning fluid were found near the body (have the article for that too)...

15) Gertrude Carr (my grandmother)- work certificate- 1924- employed as a weaver in a textile factory in Chatham. Work certificate- 1923- employed as Helper in same factory (I think). I cant read the grade level on these certificates but I know my grandmother didn’t even finish public school. Employment letter for her from Motor & Coach Limited, Chatham-1929- this is where she met my grandfather- Peter Cecil Roy Milne

16) Gertrude Carr- copies of birth certificates- with a letter to the government re: her pension stating that the original documents were destroyed in a fire in Norwalk

17) Gertrude Carr- several photo albums...most pictures are labeled although a few are rather vague- for example, there is an Aunt Gertrude Bramhill and an Aunt Gertrude Carr! If it says Aunt Gertie, I will have to compare photos...I also have a photo of a woman named Aunt Gertie Fishwick---is that the Bramhill Gertie?

I am the Great Great Grandson of Ted and Gertrude Fishwick.  Annie Fishwick (married to Walter DeCarteret) is my Grandmother. I wanted to pass along some additional information on how Ted died.

He was a passenger on the Empress of Ireland on May 30, 1914 when it was struck by the Norwegian collier Storstad and sank almost immediately.  The story that my Grand Mother told was that Ted's compartment was very close to the point of impact and he therefore had no opportunity to escape.  His body was never recovered.  The following link will provide you with more information on the Empress of Ireland.

Leonora and Thomas have one living daughter left, my Great Aunt Jean (she was the youngest I believe)...she lives in Sarnia, Ontario and isn’t in the best of health right now. Her daughter and my mom were great friends. I'll get in touch with them and see what information and things they have as well.
