Note:
We have finally found where our great grandparents fit into the Bramhill family
tree, but have still got a long way to go in providing a full account of all of
their descendants. This is as far as we have managed to get, but would be
grateful to anyone with additional information. Please email: tricmcconnell@hotmail.com
Note:
William was a brother of Thomas Bramhill (b.1840) who was the father of Richard

William Bramhill and Dora Parkinson: Family Tree
William
Bramhill and Dora Parkinson: History
By Patricia Dorothy (Bramhill) McConnell
We have very little information about our
great grandparents. William Bramhill was a hay dealer and a lay preacher in the
Methodist church. He married Dora Parkinson. William may have been born in
Epworth, but was living in Rotherham or Sheffield when their children were born.
They had six children: Richard Thomas, Lily, William, Herbert Henry, Ernest and
Alice. The only two we know anything about are Herbert Henry and his brother
Ernest, who stayed in contact with him after Herbert Henry married. Ernest had a
withered arm and was probably unable to work. It also seems that he did not
marry.
First Generation of William and Dora
Herbert
Henry Bramhill and Susan Horsewood
Herbert Henry was born in 1879 in Rotherham or
Sheffield. He left school at the age of 12 and was expected to go into the
coalmines. He was determined not to do this and ran away from home, starting up
in business as a slater in the Eastwood area of Rotherham with nothing except a
wooden handcart. The handcart stayed in the family for years and was still
around in the 1960s. Eventually he became a successful roofing contractor in
Rotherham with a reputation for good and reliable work. He died of pneumonia on
10th October 1960, aged 81 years.
Herbert Henry married Susan Horsewood on 13th
August 1902. Susan was the daughter of a turner. She was born on 12th
July 1881. She had 12 children in all, although six died in infancy.
The appearance of the children was quite striking, as six inherited their
mothers looks, being quite tall and thin, and six looked like their father;
shorter and fair haired. They were a very closely-knit family.
After Susan’s death, Herbert married
Doris. Doris already had children of her own and they had a son together: David.
Doris died in 1960. David married and had a daughter. He died in 2003.
Second
Generation of William and Dora
Alice
Bramhill
Alice
was the oldest child of Herbert Henry and Susan. She was born on 30th
October 1902. At the age of six, she watched as a steamroller ran out of control
killing her friend. Alice never recovered from the shock and died a week later,
apparently from meningitis.
Herbert
and Gladys Bramhill
Herbert was the oldest son of Herbert Henry and Susan. He resembled his
father in looks. He was born on 15th December, probably in 1903, but
we have no records to verify this. Herbert broke away from his father to start his own
building firm, which was also very successful. His sons later worked with him
until his death on Christmas Day 1983, just a few months after his brothers, Reg
and Ernie.
His wife, Gladys, had been brought up in the
country and was an expert on gathering and using wild produce, such as
mushrooms, watercress or elderflowers. She made everyone welcome and would
always have home produced food on the big kitchen table. Gladys and Herbert had
3 children: Rita, Bert and Peter. The photograph is of Herbert on his
motorcycle.
Susan Bramhill and Wilfred Cleghorn
Susan was born on 28th September 1907 and was the only girl to survive longer than a few years. She took after her mother’s side of the family in looks. She worked in her father’s business, doing the administration. Susan was an extremely gifted pianist. She married Wilf Cleghorn and they had one daughter, Jean. Susan died in May 1955, of ovarian cancer at the age of 48. It seems that ovarian cancer may run in the family, as we heard that other branches of the family had also suffered from this disease. Both Susan’s daughter, Jean, and her daughter, Gillian, also died of it in their early 40s.
The following photograph is of Susan at her wedding to Wilf.
Brother Charles is

Ernest is on the far right (back). Mother (Susan) is on the far right, front
row. We don’t know who the others are.
Charles
Bramhill and Edith Wilson
We don’t know who was with Charlie in this photograph.
One of them may be Edith.
Ernest
and Connie Bramhill
Ernest was tall and thin and took after the
mother’s side of the family in looks. He married Connie and they had two
children: Diane and Keith. Keith had Downs Syndrome. In the days before good
help was available to them, they had great difficulty raising Keith, who was
very lovable, but also strong and spirited.
In later life, Ernie always had
hobbies and was very good at them. He was interested in gardening and also took
up painting. After their daughter, Diane, married and went to live in Italy,
they enjoyed many years of holidays over there, before Ernie died, following a
stroke, in 1983. Connie died just a few years later.
This photo shows Herbert (far

Reginald
Bramhill and Jean Russell Clegg
Reg was born on 18th February
1915. He took after the father’s side of the family in looks. He was
exceptionally clever at school and continued on to take his Matriculation exams
at the Boys Grammar School (now Thomas Rotherham 6th Form College).
He obtained a particularly high mark in his German Matriculation exam, only
dropping one half mark in the entire exam. He won a scholarship to Cambridge
University. His father refused to pay to allow him to go, as he mistrusted
education and wanted Reg to work in the family firm. This caused a serious row
in the family and Reg’s older brother Herbert refused to work if Reg was made
to go out on the roofs. Herbert won the argument and Reg was spared from the
roofing trade, but he was still not allowed to go to university. He became a law
clerk in Rotherham and stayed in this job until he retired.
Reg was a
Sergeant Major during the Second World War
and was sent to Burma as a training officer. Here he contracted malaria and
nearly died as a result of an appendectomy operation. He studied the local
wildlife and also the customs of the local people. There is one story about a
local man, who had been given a stone as a tribal punishment and told that if he
dropped it, he would die. For this reason, he was unable to work. My uncle
grabbed the stone from him and said – ‘now I will die in your place’ The
local man replied ‘No, you won’t die - you’re a juju man too’!
Reg was interested in many things, but
mostly in natural history. As a child, he would cycle a few miles to Roach Abbey
every evening after school to watch badgers. He also watched badgers at Wadworth
Wood, where he was able to trace back the history of the badger setts for 400
years. He became very well known in the county as a naturalist and lecturer. He
also wrote two books: ‘Bird, Beast and Bachelor’ and ‘The Red Lad’, both
featuring wildlife in the area around Rotherham. Sadly the books were never
published.
On 22nd January 1955, he married Jean Russell Clegg, who had been a secretary where he worked for several years. Jean had been brought up by her aunt in Kimberworth after her mother died when she was 68. Her sister, Irene, who was ten years older, was already working and was able to care for herself. Jean was brought up with her cousin, Doreen.
This photo of Reg and Jean taken around 1975.
John
Alfred Bramhill and Hilda Patricia Norris
John, or Jack, as he was known by the family,
was the youngest of Herbert Henry and Susan’s children, born on 28th
December 1917. He was smaller than the others and three years younger than his
brother Reg. Jack and Reg were children together and were very close all their
lives. Jack left school at 14 and had to take a year off before starting to work
with his father, as he was too small to carry the heavy equipment and spend all
day working on roofs. At the age of 21, he was drafted into the army as a
gunner, during the Second World War. He went to France on Day 6 of the D-Day
Landings. At one time, he was hit in the helmet by a bullet and on another
occasion was nearly shot from a German aeroplane. He saved himself by diving
into a ditch of nettles, not even feeling them until the plane had long gone.
While he was stationed in Northern Ireland, he
met up with the family of his brother-in-law, Wilfred Cleghorn, married to
Susan. Here he first met Hilda Norris, Wilf’s niece. Several years later, Jack
and Hilda were married in Rotherham on 22nd December 1951. They lived
at 143 Fitzwilliam Road in Eastwood, before inheriting Sumner House along with
the Roofing Contractor business after Herbert Henry died.
Jack kept the family firm going for many years,
before retiring at the age of 50 and then working as an estate surveyor for
Sheffield Council for a few years. He had always been interested in physics and
spent much of his time inventing different things. One of his inventions was a
remote controlled electric curtain closing mechanism. He also developed a silent
flush toilet. However, due to lack of funds and time, he never managed to take
out a patent on either of these.
Hilda was born on 1st November
1926 in Belfast, N. Ireland. Her mother was Wilfred Cleghorn’s sister and her
father was a policeman in the RUC. She was the eldest of 4 girls. She left
school at 14 and worked as a shorthand typist until moving to Yorkshire to marry
Jack at the age of 24. She worked for many years as a secretary for a Rotherham
estate agent.
Jack and Hilda was taken around 1951.

Third
and Fourth Generations of William and Dora
The details for this
generation and the next are not complete, as it has not been possible to stay in
touch with all the different parts of the family, but again, if anyone has any
information they would like to add, please email Patricia at tricmcconnell@hotmail.com
Herbert and Gladys’s children are Rita,
Bert and Peter.
Bert married Ann and they had three children: John Susan and Katie. Little Katie
was another Downs Syndrome baby. Rita married John Bogle and had two children:
Johanna and Matthew. Johanna married and had children of her own. Matthew was
born with a hole in his heart and tragically died during an operation, at the
age of 11 or 12.
Susan and Wilf had one daughter, Jean,
who married Eric Hafferty. Jean had three children: Gillian,
Alison and Ian.
Jean died at the age of 42 of ovarian cancer, the same disease that claimed her
mother. Gillian also developed the disease at the age of 38 or 39. Her plans to
marry were put on hold while she fought the disease, however, the treatment was
ultimately unsuccessful. She married just two weeks before she died in 2002 at
the age of 40. Alison and Ian are both married with children.
The photographs show (1)
Jean with her uncle Jack and (2) Jean’s husband, Eric, with their three
children and two cousins, From far right: Gillian, a cousin from the Cleghorn
side, Alison, Ian on Eric’s knee and another cousin on the left.
Charlie and Edith had a daughter, Margaret.
Unfortunately, after the divorce, Charlie did not see much of his daughter and
never saw his wife again. For this reason, the rest of the family lost touch
with Margaret, who later married.
Ernie and Connie had two children: Diane and Keith.
Diane
was born in 1945. She lived with her parents and Keith
on Cranworth Road in Rotherham. After leaving school, Diane taught herself
Italian, going to Italy whenever she could for holidays. She married Leo Deluca
and went to live in Rimini. She has lived there with her family ever since. She
is an English teacher and her husband is a pharmacist. Diane has three children:
Raffaella, Riccardo and Alan.
All the children are bilingual and Raffaella studied at Sheffield University,
getting a job in the area after graduating. Alan takes after his sister in his
interest in England, while Riccardo prefers Italy. Diane has come back to
Rotherham several times a year since moving out to Italy, to spend time with her
parents, brother and aunt.
The photo
on the left shows Diane. The photo in the centre is of her daughter, Raffaella
and on the right is her son, Alan.
Reg and Jean did not have children, although they were always very close to Jack and
Hilda’s two girls.
The
photograph is of ‘Uncle’ with Jean and Patricia about summer 1969.
Jack
and Hilda had two daughters: Patricia Dorothy and Jacqueline.
