At the Bramhill Reunion, August 9, 2003, in Epworth several of us discussed the ancestry of Jonathan Bramhill who was born in 1818. Based on information provided by Marjorie Dickerson and Barrie Bramhill we were able to sort out the following ancestry of Jonathan.

 

The following information leads us to our conclusion:

 

1. Jonathan was born March 10, 1818 as the third child of Jonathan Bramhill, May 20, 1792, and M. Frances Coggan. Margaret Dickerson provided this information. From Parish records of The Parish Church of St. Andrew - Epworth. Marriages 1710 - 1812. Published by Isle of Axholme FHS. - Marriage record shows spouse as Jonathan Bramwell.

2. We have speculated that Ellen Agnes surname was “Everatt”. This would explain the Everatt name being used as a second name for many of their children.

 

3. The dates seem to fit reasonably well although Jonathan would have been born only 8 months after Mary Ann Bramhill, Jonathan and Frances Bramhill’s second child.

 

 

Jonathan Bramhill

            Jonathan Bramhill was born in March 10, 1818 in Thorne. Jonathan was the third child of Jonathan Bramhill (b. May 28, 1792) and M. Frances Coggan. Jonathan and Frances were married at St. Andrews Church in Epworth. Jonathan senior’s name was shown as Bramwell.

            Jonathan married Ellen Agnes Everatt on September 1, 1839 in Crowle, Lincolnshire. Ellen Agnes Everatt was born on February 19, 1817. Jonathan died in April 18, 1891 died in Swinefleet Common and is buried in Eastoft.

John Everett Bramhill

John Everett Bramhill was born in 1843 and Mary Ann Burkill (known as Pollie), his wife was born in 1849.

My great, great grandfather, John Everett Bramhill, and Mary Ann Burkill were married on October 24, 1867. He died January 28, 1927 at the age of 85. Mary died in 1893.

 

Their 7 children:

1.  Luther Henry Bramhill, (my great grandfather) Born January 17, 1869 in Swinefleet, Lincolnshire, England.  Died March 9, 1952.  His wife was Hannah Mary Hunt. She died April 16, 1949.

2.  Florence E. Bramhill, born January 23, 1871, Married William Rouse January 22, 1999.  I don't have a date of death for Florence.

3.  Francis William Bramhill was born March 6, 1874, don't have a date of death.

4.  Jessie Louise Bramhill, born December 17, 1876. Married Albert Edward Hobson on July 24, 1894.  She died February 20, 1958.

5.  Annie M. Bramhill was born June 26, 1878.  She married Fred Turner on January 14, 1905.  I don't have a date of death for her.

6.  Hannah M. Bramhill was born on May 23, 1880.  I have no further information for Hannah.

7.  Eva Bramhill was born July 16, 1889, she married Makin Durham on January 29, 1911 and died December 14, 1972.

Luther Henry Bramhill

Now, for my Grandparents.  Luther Henry Bramhill was born on January 17, 1869 in Swinefleet, Lincolnshire, England. He married Hannah Mary Hunt had 6 children. Hannah was born in 1871 in Goole, Yorkshire, England. Luther died March 9, 1952 and is buried at Whitgift. Hannah died on April 16, 1949.

 

Their 6 children:

1.  Harold Bramhill was born November 4, 1896.  He married Constance Squires on July 18, 1918.  He died October 11, 1972 and is buried at Shirpenbeck.

2.  Arthur - born 1891, died in infancy

3.  George Everatt Bramhill, 1894 – 1969, was married December 24, 1915 to Rose Hannah Wood.  They had 7 girls and 1 son who died in infancy

4.  Margaret Sarah Mary Bramhill (known as Maggie) was born October 5, 1900.  She married John Blacker on June 23, 1921 and died August 31, 1969. They had 5 boys and 3 girls.  Lived at Loftsham Bridge.

5.  Bertha Bramhill was born in 1901 and married George Herbert Oades May 21, 1923.  She died May 24, 1993 at age 92. George Herbert Oades who was the blacksmith at Eastoft. After his death, she married John Hunt.  No children in either marriage.

6.  Edith - 1908 - 1915; died of diphtheria at age 7. 

 

My mother remembers visiting my dad's Aunt Maggie (her full name was Margaret Sarah Mary, 1900 - 1969) at Loftsome Bridge.  That farm has now been sold and is a guesthouse currently. When mom visited there, Grandfather Luther Henry Bramhill, who is my great grandfather, was there. He was born 1869 and lived until 1952.

They had 3 children: Lesley, Gordon and Jane.  Gordon died in 1978.

Henry 1923 married Cynthia and had one son born in 1952.  After divorce, my uncle married Eileen; they have one son, David.  David also has a son.

Arthur Everatt (my dad) 1929 - 1977 married Patricia Dawn Hotham.

Francis William Bramhill

Francis William 1987 - (?)  This is Barrie's and Emma's Great Grandfather.

 

My Bramhill side of the family originates in Yorkshire - in particular South Yorkshire around Goole. My great Grandfather was Francis (Frank) William Bramhill and was raised in Goole. I believe he was born in the 1870's but information about him is scarce as he ran away too sea when he was 12! We do know that Francis William Bramhill fought in the South African war and was also stationed with the army in India. My grandfather is Rex Bramhill one of Frank's sons. My dad, Stephen Bramhill, remembers visiting a relative called Maggie at a farm but we are not sure if it is the same Maggie as the one that married John Blacker. He had a sister called Maggie. He had two sons Rex Bramhill born in about 1908 (my granddad) and Jack Bramhill. I know that Jack had at least one son Paul Bramhill who still lives in South Yorkshire. Rex had a daughter Susan Bramhill and a son Stephen Bramhill who is my dad. I have a brother called Jamie he is 27 and lives in Adelaide in Australia, and I am 21.

 

 

 

History Of The Bramhill’s At Boltgate

            The earliest descendant we have so far traced is Jonathan Bramhill born 1818-1891 who was married to Ellen Agnes (1817-1879); they produced two sons Jonathan (1850-1937) and Henry (1852-1866). There may have been more children.

 

            Jonathan married Maria Johnson (1856-1948), they are pictured in old age sat outside Boltgate House and much younger in the two individual photo’s, probably taken around 1880, the black and white photo around 1935.  This Jonathan started farming Boltgate around 1885, how he came by the farm is unclear.

            Jonathan and Maria had three children we know about, William Johnson (1879-1912) and Sarah Ellen (1881-1916), both of whom died of tuberculosis at Boltgate, Sarah contacting the disease whilst nursing her brother, a shed was erected in the garden for them to live in, as fresh air was considered the best cure for TB!  The third child was Jonathan Henry (1884-1957), who was known as Harry; he carried on farming at Boltgate.  When Harry married Sarah Elizabeth Pindar of Ousefleet, they went to live at “the Elms” Whitgift as their parents still lived at Boltgate.

Harry and Sarah had three children, Nellie 1915-1990, Harold 1919-1956 and Marjorie (1921 – and is still alive today) and living in Epworth, her married name is Woolliams.

 

Harry, Sarah and family moved from Whitgift to Brasted House, Althorpe (the house was eventually to be called Grove House).

 

Harold married Peggy Spivey from Crowle in 1939, and built a new house on the farm at Boltgate, living next door to their grandparents.

            Harold and Peggy had three children, Roger 1940, Mandy 1942 and Geoffrey 1944, in 1947 they swapped houses with Harry and Sarah so returned to Boltgate.

Harold died in 1956 and Harry in 1957, there was a period then when no male Bramhill lived at Boltgate, although Sarah carried on living in the new house until her death in 1970.

Geoffrey married Tammy Harland from Hull in 1965 and moved into the original farmhouse at Boltgate, which had since Harold’s death been occupied by farm workers.  Geoffrey and Tammy still live there today.

Roger Bramhill farmed at Welton near Hull and eventually went to live at North Newbald, near Market Weighton; he has two children Nicholas, who is a journalist in Dublin and Rebecca who is married to Richard Stockbridge and lives at Welton.

Mandy married John Brooke, a farmer from Thorne Levels and had four children.

Geoffrey and Tammy had five children

Jonathan (1966) who married Bridgett Ogg from Winteringham, they have four children, Laura, Joshua, Harry and Sinead and live at Boltgate in the new house.

Maria (1969) married Brian McKean and is now a teacher; they live in Ruddington, Nottingham and have two children Thomas and James.

Robert (1970) who lives with Kathleen in Barrow-on –Humber, he works offshore on oilrigs, they have a boy called Oliver.

Peter (1976) who is an actor and lives in London.

Georgina (1984) who as just completed her A’ Levels and is going to study at Leeds University.

We have also found a grave marked (1886-1891) son of Everatt & Esther Bramhill we think that Everatt could have been another son of Jonathan & Ellen Agnes as they are buried in Eastoft close together.

Maria’s Grandparents were Robert and Sarah Johnson.  I don’t have a surname for Sarah at present, but have a couple of leads I’m chasing on that one.

 

Robert Johnson (b.25.12.1822 Goole Fields House; d. 11/02/1890 Goole Fields House; buried at Whitgift on 14/02/1890 at 2.30pm.  I have loads of those little, black-edged death announcement cards with all the details on it.  I must get around to scanning them one of these days - then I could send you it.  Sarah was born at Winterton on 12th December 1825, and died at Goole Fields House on 14th April 1905.  When Annie Elizabeth Johnson married Lewis Holdridge, Lewis moved into his wife’s farm, Goole Fields House, and Sarah continued to live with them until her death.

 

Robert and Sarah had four daughters:  Maria (1849-6/2/1941), Annie Elizabeth (1850-30/10/1928), Mary (30/10/1853 - 26/9/1889) and Alice (8/9/1855 - 25/9/1857). 

 

Mary married Mr William Everatt of Eastoft in the first quarter of 1889, but she was stricken by an illness and died on 26/9/1889.  She was buried in Whitgift on 29/9/1889 next to her parents and sister Alice.

My Bramhill side of the family originates in Yorkshire - in particular South Yorkshire around Goole. My great Grandfather was Francis (Frank) William Bramhill and was raised in Goole. I believe he was born in the 1870's but information about him is scarce as he ran away too sea when he was 12! We do know that Francis William Bramhill, fought in the South African war and was also stationed with the army in India. My grandfather is Rex Bramhill one of Frank's sons. My dad, Stephen Bramhill, remembers visiting a relative called Maggie at a farm but we are not sure if it is the same Maggie as the one that married John Blacker. ! He had a sister called Maggie. He had two sons Rex Bramhill born in about 1908 (my grandad) and Jack Bramhill. I know that Jack had at least one son Paul Bramhill who still lives in South Yorkshire. Rex had a daughter Susan Bramhill and a son Stephen Bramhill who is my dad. I have a brother called Jamie he is 27 and lives in Adelaide in Australia, and I am 21.

I hope this sheds a bit of light, unfortunately it is difficult to find out anything further back as both my grandparents are dead.

When Harry married Sarah they went to live at "The Elms", Whitgift since his parents still lived at Boltgate. Harry, Sarah and family moved from Whitgift to Brasted House, Althorpe (the house was eventually to be called Grove House).
